 About Us
Founded in Toronto 34 years ago by Myrlene Sundberg (Interior Designer) and John Palchinski (Artist), Urban Mode is a true original. In late 1977, they decided to try out their entrepreneurial wings and open a retail store called The Second Story in the then still gritty Queen Street West area. Surrounded by boarded up windows and second hand stores, a spark of a dream developed to bring fun and colourful design at affordable prices to the market place. John’s background in contemporary art and Myrlene’s love of craft and furniture design flourished.
Their focus has always been evident…a love of modern design, fun colour and contemporary furniture. With the purchase of their new home, a former 3 bay garage on Tecumseth St in the Queen West West area, a custom designed pre-fab pod has been added to display the Blu Dot gallery of modern furniture design.

Urban Mode offers modern design in many categories from furnishings to accessories to fun gifts. We carry such distinctive lines as: Blu Dot, Calligaris, Lind Furniture, Blomus, Inhabit, Atlas Homewares and Viso Lighting, just to name a few.

We are experts in sourcing products to create your unique look and style but if you prefer, our newest product and service is creating custom pieces for our customers. We know it can be frustrating to source pieces that are the right size for your environment. We will work with you to create sofas, sectionals, tables or benches to suit your style and budget. All are top quality, Canadian made and custom designed for you.

Being a small, independent company allows us to have more interaction with our customers. By working closely with our customers, we expect to make your experience at Urban Mode an enjoyable one. Our experienced staff share a passion for design and customer service. They are available to assist our customers in resolving any design issues they may have.
